Another complex and powerful vintage from Cat Canyon in the sandy and hilly Los Alamos Valley.
Overt aromatics of blackberries, sweet currants, black olives, herbs, and spice. Whole cluster fermentation
provides soft, yet substantial tannins. Rich and supple in the mouth, with a persistent finish.

Harvest Clone 1: October 6, 24.5 brix, 3.60 pH
Estrella Clone: October 6, 24.0 brix, 3.50 pH
Clone 174: November 2, 27.5 brix, 3.50 pH
Clone 877: November 4, 27.2 brix, 3.25 pH
Composition: 100% Syrah
Fermentation: 'Hillside' fruit (73%- Clone 1 and Estrella) was lightly foot-stomped
and whole cluster fermented for 11 days in small fermenter boxes.
'Flats' fruit (27%- 877 and 174) was stemmed, not crushed. Intact,
whole berries fermented in small boxes for 14 days after a 48 hour
cold soak
Barrel Aging: 18% new French oak, 9% new American oak, 73% neutral French barrels
Cellar notes: Unfined, unfiltered

The estate's 2009 Syrah Verna's Vineyard is another of the more restrained wines in this lineup. It was fermented with 73% whole clusters, which may account for much of the complexity in the glass. Blackberries, olive tapenade and herbs are some of the notes that come together in this refined, polished Syrah. There is more than enough going on to provide at least a handful of years of highly rewarding drinking. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024.
